Giveaway Winner and Hookers

I'm sure most of you didn't show up at Torres Tidbits to read about hookers, but that's what you are going to get AFTER I announce the winner of Rhea Lana of South Tulsa's $10 Spending Cash.

Drumroll Please....

Nicole Turrel Hardenburgh

Congratulations, Nicole!!!  Please email me at WispClips@hotmail.com by noon tomorrow (Wednesday, February 6th), and I will tell you how to claim your prize.  If for some reason the prize goes unclaimed, I will randomly choose another winner Wednesday late afternoon.

Now onto hookers.  My story really has less to do with this...

...and more to do with this...

So yesterday I went to the dentist first thing in the morning.  Let's not discuss the act of Congress it takes for me to actually make an appointment, let alone get there.  That's a whole other day and a whole other topic.

I digress.

At my dentist appointment, I get a few texts coordinating where I'll meet my sis-in-law to pick up the boys for the day.  We decided to meet at Steven's office since that's where I was going to pick up Little Miss and Chubby Cheekers.  After Steven and I trade vehicles and I get the nephews loaded up, we head home.

I'm just driving when Chunkey Monkey strikes up an unusual conversation.

CM:  Hey Aunt Amanda?
Me:  Yes, honey?
CM: I'm going to get me a hooker.

Stop here. For the life of me, I have not a clue where this came from.  I'm thinking maybe my BIL was discussing a case (he's a police officer) and he overheard something.

Me:  A what?
CM:  I'm going to get a hooker so I can climb that mountain over there.
Me:  Ohhhhh, right.  That's great, honey.
CM:  Little Miss, I'm gonna buy you a hooker too.

Now I lived through the year that Little Man referred to his scooter as his cooter, but this is a whole new realm of embarrassment.  I'm just very thankful this time the conversation occurred within the safety of my car.  If for some reason hookers come up again, say in about 15 years, I'll have some serious concerns.  Until then, we'll keeping working on the vocabulary...and laugh at the mix-ups.

How about a $20 Gift Certificate to the sale???

Of course I'm going to ask you to do something.  First put your left hand on your right cheek palm side out.  Then lift up your left foot.  While holding your hand to your face and lifting up your left foot, hop three times. Did you do it?  Of course not.  That would be ridiculous (however, if you did do it, will you tell me so I can laugh?).

In all seriousness, I'm only going to ask you to...
  • Join their mailing list from their website.

Reminder:  The winner for the Rhea Lana Gift Certificate is Joanna Cole.  Since the sale begins this week, you'll need to contact me at WispClips@hotmail.com by Tuesday, February 28th to claim your prize.  For all you other ladies, stay tuned.  If I haven't heard from the lucky winner, I'll do a redraw on Wednesday, February 29th!

Apparently life keeps on rolling even when you have a baby.  As much as I'm trying to freeze time, it's not working.  I've accepted this truth so we're back to a semi-normal routine.  Hence, there is a Menu Monday today.  This will be quite interesting getting back into the cooking since we have had non-stop meals delivered to our house since coming home from the hospital.  I've been a little spoiled by great friends and family.

So without further ado, here's what I'll be fixin'...

Monday-Broiled Salmon, Broccoli and Cheese, and Buttered Bread
Tuesday-Homemade Pizza and Salad with Cheesy Bread
Wednesday-Dinner brought to us by the Jones' (she's a great cook!)

A Wee Bit O'Shopping

Okay, this title may be a bit misleading.  Shopping I love, but not more than I love a good deal.  Recently, I received a catalog in the mail and I was astounded by pricing of certain items.  Items listed way lower than I ever imagined.  Sometimes even hundreds of dollars of what I would have something should have cost.  Now that's my kind of bargain.

I must admit the shopping catalog I received wasn't necessarily the kind you would usually look through, and the items weren't really items you and I would need.  We lead a convenient life.  We have easy access to the needs and wants for our families.  This magazine was the Samaritan's Purse 2011 Gift Catalog.  Just check out some of the deals inside...

Feed a Hungry Baby for a Week...........$9
Teach a Child to Read & Write.............$15
Give an Orphan a Month of Care..........$35
Help Save Lives of Mothers & Babies..$45
Hot Meals............................................$7
Milk.....................................................$5
Life Saving Medicine for 50 people.......$60
Stock a Fish Pond................................$50
Dairy Goat...........................................$70
Fishing Boats........................................$50

When you compare these prices with the items we typically buy from catalouges or online, it seems ridiculous.  I'm thinking this week I might forgo some of my typically purchases and do a wee bit o'shopping for others.  Who knows, I might just buy a boat this week...or a goat...

Rhea Lana Giveaway #2

UPDATE: The winner to the giveaway pass is...

AMY CONNOR

You're name may not be Ginger, and you may not have won the $20 Rhea Lana of South Tulsa's Spending Cash, BUT you could win an early shopping pass.

We all know that the key to finding great deals at consignment sales is getting there early.  Most places you have to volunteer for HOURS and HOURS to get the good deals, but today you don't.  Since the ladies at Rhea Lana of South Tulsa are so generous, they are allowing ONE lucky reader this...

Get ready for it...

Brace yourself...

Get your Depends if you need it...

One lucky reader will receive the oh so coveted...

 EARLY SHOPPING PASS!!!

Yes, you read that right.  A Torres Tidbit-er will not have to volunteer to cut in on the best deals ever.  I only ask that if you win you don't rub it in to the other volunteers.  Like don't go up to a new mom who's wearing her newborn baby and say, "So how many hours did you work?  You should ask me how many I did.  NONE!  Ha. Ha."

Yeah, that would not go over well.  Since the early shopping day is well...TODAY @ 5pm this giveaway will close at 2pm and I'll announce the winner @ 2:30.  How's that for a fast turnaround???

To enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this blog, or on the link that posts to Facebook.  I'm really curious to know what you're looking for at this sale.  So do tell!

Menu Monday and a WINNER!

The winner for the $20 Rhea Lana of South Tulsa's Spending Cash is...

Ginger Hornstein

Congrats Ginger!  Email me at wispclips@hotmail.com to claim yo' prize.

If you didn't win and you plan on shopping Rhea Lana of South Tulsa this week, come back tomorrow.  I'll be hosting yet another giveaway from Rhea Lana!

Onto the menu for the week.  This is what sounds good to me right now.  We'll see if it all gets made.  Lately when it comes to making dinner, my preggo stomach can't handle what's on the menu so it gets changed.  This is the main reason why you'll see some repeats from last week. It didn't get consumed so it gets thrown back on the menu.

Monday-Mexican Lasagna, Corn Saute, Arroz con Gandules
Tuesday-Chicken Salad Sandwiches and Sweet Potato Fries
Wednesday-Lemon Grilled Chicken, Broc Bake, Texas Roadhouse Rolls
Thursday-Dinnner @ the Kueny's

Rhea Lana of South Tulsa and a GIVEAWAY!!!

Heard of it?  If not, and you are interested in consigning your child's too small clothes, toys that just collect dust, or all that baby stuff in your attic, then this is the outlet for you!  The Rhea Lana of South Tulsa's sale is scheduled for August 3-6th at The Shops at Regal Plaza, 105th and Memorial (facing the Hampton Inn)

Since we have just one more little precious baby coming in February, I am hanging onto all of Little Man and Little Miss' baby items.  However, after we're done with the items I will most definitely hit up Rhea Lana for the first time.  Let me tell you why...

  • Rhea Lana allows you to keep 70% of your sales.  Period.
  • Consigners can make up to 80% with referrals.
  • Consigning fee is only $7.50.
  • Items are guaranteed against loss or theft, which means if they are lost or stolen while in their possession, they will pay you for them.
  • Consigners can track sales in real time. LIVE!
  • Rhea Lana has a mobile app where you can check your sales on the go.
  • At the end of the week, you can pick up your unsold items and your CHECK!
  • Tagging system is easy and THEY print the tags for you at check-in.
  • Free parking and admission everyday.
I have done JBF before, but the consigner fee was $12.50 and I only earned 65% of my sales.  Then I had to wait a couple of weeks to receive my check through the mail.  Rhea Lana definitely has the upper hand with offering more money to consigners' pockets AND a quick check pick-up.  If you are interested in consigning, don't think twice about trying Rhea Lana.

The consigner sign up deadline is August 1st at midnight.  This means you STILL have time to earn money on items sitting around your house.  The wonderful ladies at Rhea Lana are more than happy to answer any of your questions to ease you through this process.  Here's the contact info...

Banana Papers Giveaway

I'm fairly certain Jamie of Banana Papers would strangle me with this next giveaway if she still had it in her possession because my photog skills are lacking just a bit.  For some reason, I just couldn't convey all the cuteness this fabric bunting contains.  If I were Ashley Ann of Under the Sycamore I'd find the most inventive way to string this craftiness and take a picture of it, but I'm not. I'm Amanda Torres of Torres Tidbits and it takes me months to finish an old window pane.  Please do not let my lack of skills sway you into not entering this giveaway.

Without further ado, here's what you could win...

A truly one of a kind Red Fabric Bunting from Jamie of Banana Papers.

{Try not to be jealous of the sheer awesomeness of my photos}

Banana Papers' Etsy shop is currently closed because Ms. Jamie is too busy renovating the most adorable house.  When I say adorable, I mean it.  I literally walked from room to room picking my jaw up off the floor admiring her taste and creativity.  I do hope she reopens her store in the future, and I can reassure you I will let you know if she does.  For now, we'll just give away one of her last items.

In order to win this Red Fabric Bunting* you need to answer one question by leaving a comment on this blog or the link that posts to Facebook.  If you get it wrong, you get disqualified.  No pressure, right?  Okay here's the question...

What color underwear am I wearing right now?

Kidding!  I wouldn't do that to you (or me).  I really want to know...

If you win this giveaway, what do you plan to do with it?

I always marvel at other people's ideas when it comes to decorating, so fess up.  I want to know details people.

*Giveaway ends Sunday, June 19th @ midnight. Winner will be announced on Monday, June 20th

F.I.T. Boot Camp Giveaway

I'm not gonna lie.  I don't enjoy working out.  I enjoy the feeling after working out, but not the feeling during.  A couple months back I began taking a boot camp class with Miranda Burcham.  Miranda is known in our area as the personal trainer for Danny Cahill, Broken Arrow, OK's Biggest Loser Winner.  Shortly after I began her classes she had a short blonde cutie pie sub for her.  I really didn't think there would be anyone who could work me as hard as Miranda, but I stood corrected. Erica of F.I.T Boot Camp killed my arms, legs, and abs.  She has me up and running at 6am two times during the week.

I can fully attest that Erica knows how to motivate, encourage, and work your body like nobody's business.  Even though this is her business, she takes a very personal interest in all of her clients.  With that said, when I asked Erica if she would be willing to donate one week's worth of boot camps sessions, she said, "How about 2 weeks?"  She how great she is!

Here are the details of what ONE lucky winner will receive...

A two week pass to F.I.T Boot Camp. You can attend all or any of the four weekly classes.  Classes are held in Broken Arrow @ the Renaissance Park Practice Fields (33rd and 204th).
Class times are as follows:

Mon: 5:30 am-6:15 am
Tues: 7:30 pm-8:15 pm
Wed: 5:30 am-6:15 am
Thurs: 7:30 pm-8:15 pm

To enter this giveaway, you need to answer this question...

"On a scale of 1-10, how's your workout routine been lately?
0=Non-existent, and 10=I'm ready for that Ironman

You can leave a comment on this blog OR on the link that posts on Facebook (I know many of you say it's hard to post on here).  Contest ends Sunday, June19th @ midnight.  Winner will be announced Monday, June 20th.

If you are interested in contacting Erica to join her summer special, you can email her at  Erica@FITBootCampTulsa.com

A Beautiful True Story of Giving

During the holiday season it's all too easy to get tunnel vision.  Tunnel vision on the Christmas lists.  Tunnel vision on decorating. Tunnel vision hosting the perfect party.  Tunnel vision on ourselves and are own family.  However, my own tunnel vision was halted a couple of days ago when I heard this story from a very close friend of mine.

Two days ago, my friend was pulling up to a job site and noticed a little girl about 2 years old walking around in a nightgown at an apartment complex.  It was about 10:00am and it was cold.  My friend is a father himself, so he walked right over to the little girl and bent down to talk with her.  He asked over and over, "Where is your Mommy?"  He was just hoping that she would point to the direction of her apartment.  He had no such luck.  As he bent over to pick her up, he immediately noticed her cold skin and soiled diaper. Wrapping her in his coat, he yelled out "Does anyone know this child?"

Suddenly a little boy about 4 years old, completely naked on a tricycle pedals around the corner and says, "Dat's my sister."  Completely concerned he calls out to the workers he was checking on and they come over to help keep the kids warm and locate the parents.  With no such luck the police were called.  The arriving officer immediately knew where the kids lived.  He had been there on a domestic call the previous week.

The officer knocked on the door.  With no answer, he forces the door open to find the mother asleep on the bed.  My friend and the other men who had offered to help warm the children were called into the apartment.  As he walked in, he saw Corn Flakes crushed into the carpet.  A Spaghetti-O's can opened and soiled into the carpet as well.  It was a complete mess.  The mother stumbled out from her bedroom and thanked the men.  She didn't notice her kids had escaped.  Since the mother was physically present, and there was food in the house, the kids were left with their mother.  The officer said there was nothing more he could do.

When I first heard this story I was completely disgusted with the mother.  How in the world could you just neglect your children like that?  To be so completely unaware of what's going on? To let your kids fend for themselves at such a young age?  Horrendous.

Here's where the great part of the story comes in.  My friend was appalled too, but his family decided to be proactive about it.  Obviously this mother needed some guidance.  His wife went to the grocery store and purchased food for the monther and her children.  She purchased items that the kids would be able to serve themselves, and items for the mother to cook.  Judging by her husband's description she also purchased clothes for the children.

As a family, they plan on delivering the items tonight, and inviting the family to their local church function.  Who knows, maybe she'll attend and maybe she won't.  Maybe she won't even accept the gifts.  But, I know one thing.  She can't deny that this family has a love for her, and desires a better life for her children.

I tell you this story, because it was an eye opener to Steven and me.  Sometimes, we fail to look at all people as God's creation.  God loves that woman no less than he loves you or me.  I can assure you the choices she currently makes will bring her pain, but this couple has shown her how God loves.  They are giving mercy and grace in hopes of changing her life.  During this holiday season, I hope we all can be given an opportunity to make a difference, and see the needs of people.

Update:  The police officer did file a report with DHS regarding the children.

Where Did We Go Wrong???

We want our kids to appreciate what they have been given.  I think everyone does.  So when you continually hear your four year old say, "I wanna get that sometime," you start to wonder where you went wrong.  It's not wrong for him to ask for things he wants.  We want him to ask, but we don't want him to ask about everything in sight, and then pout when he doesn't get what he wants.  So I decided we should focus on buying something for a child who is not as privileged as Little Man.

With Christmas around the corner Samaritan's Purse has already started Operation Christmas Child.  I thought this would be perfect for Little Man to get involved in giving to others.  At first, I thought it was a lost cause.  Shopping at the store, he started wandering down the boy aisle searching for the toys he wanted.   Frustrating.  He whined that he didn't want to buy toys for a little girl his age.  Frustrating.  How in the world did I raise and ungrateful child???  I kept on.  Asking Little Man what he wanted to purchase for our Christmas Child.  Eventually, he decided on art supplies.  A sharp left onto art supply aisle.  Yes!  He's starting to get it.  That's when Little Miss started up.  She noticed the little Cinderella figurine in the cart.  "Rella, Rella.  I want Rella."  I couldn't catch a break!  Frustrating.

Standing in line to pay for the items, both the kids had settled down and I look over to Little Man who is touching the items on the belt.  He looks at me and says, "I think she's really gonna like this Mommy.  I think she's gonna like it 'cause I like it."  I almost cried.  He got it.  Then I glanced over at Little Miss.  She was picking her nose.  She didn't get it.  One out of two's not bad.  I'll take what I can get.

Later on in the evening, we wrapped the box and packed it full.  Both Little Miss and Little Man were making a gigantic mess out of the wrapping paper and tape helpers.  The wrapping job could have gone a lot faster had I done it after they'd gone to bed, but I wanted them to be apart of the whole process.  I want them to know that giving is one of the best feelings they will experience in their life.  So tomorrow we will head off to a drop off location and send our package on its way to a precious child somewhere in this world.

{Showing off their purchase}

{The final package}

If you are interested in participating in Operation Christmas Child, it's not too late.  This week is the week to drop off your box at the designated locations. If you don't have time to get the goodies, you can always donate $7 or more to help pay for the shipping costs of all these boxes.

Wisp Clip Giving Project

Every month I like to run a special over at Wisp Clips on Facebook.  This month, I'm doing a giveaway.  If you do not have a facebook account, you can enter the giveaway here (just leave a comment on this post to enter).  Giveaway ends November 14th and the winner will be announced on the 15th.

Also, since it's November I thought it would be appropriate to show some thanks.  My family has been blessed, and I wish the same for you.  Unfortunately, many children live in worlds that we could not even imagine.  Love 146 is an organization that reaches out to children who know not what being a child is about.  It was difficult for me to initially read the stories about these children who have been purchased/stolen and forced into the sex slave industry, but I had to get passed it.  If I chose to turn my eyes and simply not think about it, I'd be turning my back God's creations.  I am thankful that the people of Love 146 are being proactive in rescuing, restoring, and preventing children from sex slavery.

So, for the month of November every Wisp Clip product purchased, $1 will be donated to Love 146.  That means if you purchase 10 clips/bows, $10 will be donated to Love 146.

I want to be careful to note that Love 146 knows nothing about me other than having records of our family's giving.  If you have organizations that you regularly donate to, please continue to give.  This is just a way to be giving and receive something for yourself or child.

Wisp Clips

Little Miss is infamous for ripping out hair clips and throwing them in stores, in the car, or at church.  Basically wherever she is, she likes to throws them.  I used to buy them off Etsy at $5 a pop.  Needless to say it's frustrating to see $5 get chunked.  This led me to start investigating how they are made.

Introducing the Basic Wisp Clips!  These Wisp Clips are very basic, but just perfect for the everyday wear.  Whether you're clipping back baby hair or your little girl's locks, these are sure to not slip out of place.  Now your child ripping it out, that's a different story...

Set of 5 Basic Wisp Clips
{$7}

{View of the no-slip foam.  This insures the clip to stay in place.)

If you would like to purchase individual clips, they are $1.50 each.   I will be adding other colors within the week.  I'm still working on the perfect embellishments for my own Little Miss' hair.  As soon as I'm happy with the creation, I'll post those too.

Now for the Giveaway!!!
One reader will receive the above Basic Wisp Clips.  Answer the following question to enter...

Who do you plan on giving the Wisp Clips to?

For additional entries you can...

  • Blog about this giveaway (and tell me about it with a separate comment).

  • Tell your friends about it on Facebook or Tweet it (and tell me about it with a separate comment).
